June 12: Democracy Lives When Votes Are Honoured, Representatives Serve — QS Aminu Suleiman

As Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial candidate for Kogi East, QS Aminu Abubakar Suleiman, has called for renewed commitment to democratic values, credible representation and accountability in governance.

Suleiman, in a statement commemorating June 12, described the day as a reminder of the courage displayed by Nigerians who, 33 years ago, trooped out to exercise their civic rights in what remains one of the defining moments in the country’s democratic history.

According to him, the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election remains a painful chapter in Nigeria’s political journey, but the ideals of the struggle have continued to shape the nation’s democratic aspirations.

“Democracy is not the day of the election. It is every day after — in the chamber, in the constituency, and in the report rendered to the people,” he said.

The ADC candidate noted that for the people of Kogi East, comprising nine local government areas stretching from Ankpa and Bassa to Idah, Ibaji, Omala and Olamaboro, Democracy Day represents more than a public holiday.

He described it as “a covenant renewed annually” that places a responsibility on leaders to earn public trust, govern with integrity and remain accountable to the people.

Suleiman, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (FNIQS), said his aspiration to represent Kogi East in the National Assembly is built around the principles of accessible leadership and people-focused legislation.

He said effective representation goes beyond electoral campaigns, stressing that elected officials must maintain constant engagement with their constituents.

“Credible representation means showing up not only on election day but every sitting day of the Senate. People-centred lawmaking means that bills sponsored in Abuja must reflect conversations and realities from town halls across our communities,” he stated.

He further explained that the values of the ADC align with the ideals of June 12, describing the party’s commitment to inclusive, transparent and responsible leadership as essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

“The handshake symbol of the ADC is not merely a logo; it represents the compact between a representative and the people who entrust him with their collective voice,” he added.

The Kogi East senatorial hopeful urged residents of the district to actively participate in the democratic process by registering to vote, engaging with political issues and demanding accountability from all candidates.

“Democracy is strongest when the people are informed and engaged. Kogi East is ready. The choice belongs to the people, and I am prepared to earn it,” he said.

Suleiman is the ADC candidate for Kogi East Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections. His campaign organisation, headquartered in Idah, said his candidacy is anchored on professional competence, legislative preparedness and commitment to responsive representation.
